Next Race: Saturday May 12

sceenshot

Race 2 of the SMX point series was an exciting weekend at the Stateline Challenge with the younger generation making its way through the ranks to top the podium in all the premier classes. I also got a chance to get some track time in myself and had some of the closest battles I have ever encountered.  Big thanks to Lee Collins for putting on the Stateline Super Moto Challenge by WHR Motorsports in an effort to help keep the sport alive. SMX current point standings are now posted and to qualify for points at the Stateline a rider had to register for a race with SMX previous to the Stateline to be counted in 2012. We have some great prizes to giveaway for the banquet that is held at the end of the year like Bell Helmets, ASV product, FMF product, SuperSprox and the list goes on, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to win something. To qualify for the drawing and championship at the end of the year a rider just has to register for 3 of the races this year with SMX.

Additional raffle tickets are also given for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. We also have a promo for first time racers in the Knobby/Sportsman/Dot class with the first entry being free. So tell a friend you know that might be interested in giving Super Moto a try.

Our next race is at Qualcomm Stadium on the West Side on Saturday May 12th with some new variations in the track to help slow down the back straight a bit. This race includes all Super Moto classes, Vintage Sport bike, & scooters with the additional Super Moto section that includes our urban cross jumps. Gates open at 7am for the latest photos, classes, rules or upcoming events go to www.RaceSMX.com

See you at the races,

We Barely Made It…

GenericBlogHeader

We barely made it before the rain. We were literally closing up trailer and getting ready to leave Qualcomm when Mother Nature started to dump on us.

SMX wants to thank everyone that came out to race for the first race. Turnout wasn’t as good as originally hoped for the first event.  Having to change dates at the last minute will always interfere with racers schedules and the chance of rain on race day lowered attendance as well I’m sure. But the important thing is that we now have a race under our belt for 2012 and are ready to really start cooking with gas.

The track was grippy and it was obvious by the way everyone was moving.  As usual Fabio was railing his scooter while the vintage road race bikes were flying. Rick Leouberjer proved that a big guy can be fast on a small bike.  We even had a knobby rider who had never ridden supermoto. He didn’t do badly at all. Not to mention he had no problems with traction running the 21″/19″ knobby combo.  Steve DuFloth, Mike Bencic, Iwo Iwaszkiewicz and Hai Pham (just to name a few) weren’t holding back either. No one was leaving any cards on the table. Everyone in attendance including Drew Isenhower and Daria Cannon (children racers) came to race. It was great to see. Racers testing bikes. Racers prepping for season. Racers being racers.

We met some newcomers and saw some old faces from races past. We were fortunate enough to talk with some of the racers at the event about future events and some new ideas. We received some very good feedback and ideas from you guys.

So in a nutshell…….it was a fun day. No one was injured and I saw nothing but smiles at the end of the day. So in my book, everyone had FUN. The points have been posted on the SMX website. You can go there and see exactly how the event played out. While you’re at the website you can see our event schedule. You definitely want to write those dates on your calendar. SMX is working on some new/different ideas for the series. We ARE NOT going to be like every other race series. SMX will be a unique race series that will draw racers from all around. From supermoto to vintage road race and scooters. We are working to grow into something special, and that’s not just with supermoto. Scooters and vintage road race bikes are part of our plan as well. So stay tuned and keep an eye out on Facebook and www.racesmx.com and you will see the changes as they happen.

One person I want to point out (I don’t want to embarrass, but acknowledge) is Phil Henderson. This dude is on fire! He was like a man possessed. In the off season he lost a bunch of weight and got himself a nice supermoto track weapon. If you didn’t notice Phil at the race that’s because he was hauling a**! He is riding like a new younger man. We were so impressed by Phil. Phil is an example of wanting something, working at it and reaping the rewards. I hope I’m still banging bars when I’m Phil’s age. Very good work Phil, can’t wait to see you ride next time.

Lastly, we’d like to remind everyone to go back and review rules and regulations. There were a few people that were a little “unprepared” to race. It’s the first race of the season so I understand, but next time everyone needs to have bikes prepped and ready to race. Safety is first and foremost. If racing isn’t safe than we can’t race.

Thanks everyone and hope to see everyone at Stateline. As always, questions or comments contact me, any problems or complaints contact Steve.

Take care my friends,

Sean

“Racing is life. Everything before and after is just waiting.”  Steve McQueen

I was ready to start the season last Sunday. Steve was ready to start the season last Sunday. SMX riders were ready to start the season last Sunday. Mother Nature, well she had another idea. I know postponing the race was a disappointment to some and a sense of relief to others. But none of that matters now because March 18th 2012 is history.

Mother Nature ain’t got nothing on supermoto. Sunday March 25th 2012 will be the first event of the SMX Racing Supermoto season RAIN OR SHINE! You had to wait an extra week. You had to think about how late you’re going to brake into turn 1. You had to lie in bed and picture the perfect start, banging some bars, and getting that holeshot. How many times have you looked at your bike since last week? I know you guys do that stuff because I do that stuff. I watch videos on YouTube of guys in my race class. I look over my bike 3-4-5-6……….times. I’m no different than Steve McQueen (except he was fast and I suck). Racing has taken over my life just like Steve McQueen and probably just like a lot of you. We all still have families that come first(they better come first), we all have jobs, we all have responsibilities, we all have bills and we all love racing a motorcycle. I know this to be true or why would you be reading this email? Racing is what I think about. Racing is what I talk about. Racing is what I spend A LOT of money on. Racing is what I’ve put myself in danger for. Racing is what I will race in any weather condition for. Racing is what I’ve driven hours and hours to do. Get it? I’m willing to bet a lot of you are like me? If you didn’t love racing motorcycles, then why would you do any of those things? It doesn’t matter if you’re on a vintage bike, scooter, road racer, or speedway bike. The fact is that you love doing it. And that love is not conditional on how fast you are or how good you do at the race. If you love racing, you will do it no matter what the results are. You may not like the results, but you will still have the love affair for racing.

That being said, who cares if it’s a little chilly, or if a little rain my fall? Who cares if you win or lose? You want to do it. You want to race, to compete, to have fun. You love to race and racing is what we’re going to do for a few days a month. Get on that bike and remind yourself why you love doing it so much. You will thank you later. Trust me.

As always, if you have any questions comments, concerns don’t hesitate to contact Steve or myself. 2012 is the year of Supermoto and we need all your help to get there.

Take care my friends,

Sean

2012 The Year of Supermoto

sean

“If you only look at what it is, you’ll never be able to see what it is capable of becoming.”

It seems like just yesterday we were racing at Apex at the final SMX race of the 2011 season. Now we are in the first few days of March with only a couple weeks until the first race of the 2012 SMX race season. It’s going to be a big year for SMX and Supermoto in general. There are a lot of new and exciting things to come for SMX and the sport of Supermoto in 2012.

One of the first changes to come to SMX Racing in 2012 came behind the scenes. Kirk Zurbriggen is no longer partners with Steve Isenhower in SMX Racing. Kirk has stepped aside in pursuit of different business ventures. Fortunately for SMX, Kirk will still continue to help the series by providing Bridgestone tire sales and Bridgestone contingency program. So help a company that helps Supermoto and buy Bridgestones.

This leads me to where I introduce myself. My name is Sean Arnold and some may know me from Damn Dummy Racing. I’ve been on both sides of SMX in the past as racer and tech inspector. Now my new role will be as Steve’s partner in SMX series. I come from a technical background, so please feel free to contact me via phone/email or at the track if you have any technical questions or issues.

Another big change for 2012 is the venues and tracks we have scheduled. The first race is March 18 on west side of Qualcomm Stadium. This will be the “new “Westside supermoto course. There have been complaints in the past about the big 1 mile west side course, so we made a few changes and came up with a very good compromise. The new configuration will be more supermoto style and less fast road race style. And of course we will still have the jumps. (Download the entry form here)

An exciting addition to the SMX race schedule was the Stateline Supermoto Challenge. This is one of the largest supermoto races in the country. Racers travel from all over to compete at the Buffalo Bill casino in Primm NV. I highly recommend participating in this event. It is well worth the time and money. There are discounted hotel rooms which really help out in this economy.

Now fast forward to September 14-16. Location, OC Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa Ca. You will be gridded it waiting for the light to go off. That’s right, no flagger, and a light to signal the start. This is just one of the unique aspects of the OCGP. This is an event you need to put in calendar. This is one of the best events around, if not the best. Look at forums, talk to people who raced last year. Everyone who participated last year had a blast. DO NOT MISS IT!

Besides the first half of season, we are working on the last half of the season and hoping to do some unique events. Events/races that other series do not do. Events/races that people will look forward to each year. Steve and I both have numerous ideas that we are working on. And as soon as possible we will let everyone know the schedule for last half of year.

Lastly, SMX wants to thank our sponsors and supporters for everything they do. We were lucky enough to resign almost all of our sponsors. We are also looking for new sponsors to help support our series. If anyone would like a tax deduction or knows someone who needs a tax deduction, please contact Steve or myself. And most importantly, on behalf of Steve and myself, I want to thank each and every one of you who participates in SMX Racing, and participate in the sport of supermoto. This wouldn’t be possible without you. SMX and supermoto needs you! We need the racers, the customers, the individuals and groups alike. We need big companies and small companies. We need everyone who wants the sport of supermoto to continue to existing, to participate. That’s why we plan to have a great series for all to come and enjoy. And that’s also why we are doing our free promo.

Any first time racer who wants to try supermoto can do it FREE! That’s right, free. Any first time racer can come down to any of the events and race the knobby/DOT class free. This offer is for Knobby/DOT class only. Go to www.racesmx.com and look at race class rules and see what qualifies for the knobby/DOT class (I’ll give you a hint…DRZ qualifies). So tell a friend and get them to come down and race at any event in Knobby/DOT class for free.
Now that the first newsletter is done and was serious, the rest will be less serious. I did the first newsletter with the serious business now I’ll go back to being Sean.

MARCH 18 IS COMING SOON! I’m getting excited! Thanks everyone hope to see you all racing SMX.

A reporter asked Marco Simoncelli this question once.

“Aren’t you afraid you might die in an accident?”

Marco’s response: “No. You live more for five minutes going fast on a bike, than other people do in all their life.”

Take care my friends,

Sean Arnold
